Nice to see places we visited for the first time this summer! What happened in 2000?

Thanks for posting all these wonderful photos, it makes me want to get a scanner or digital camera! We hike every weekend or ski here around Portland-- the Gorge, beach, Mt. Hood, Adams, St Helens, Jefferson and it's quite different from the Rockies. Karen Ashford

I just happened to navigate in to your site via Ron Miller's Unimog photo and his aircraft crash site info page. As a potential Unimog buyer, aircraft wreckchaser and hiker in southern California, I found your site to be quite interesting and informative. Doug, Los Angeles, CA

Enjoyed your list. Look forward to your updates and new information. I have collected news clippings of Colorado-Wyoming crash sites for many years and have visited a few in person as well.

Keep up your excellent work. Particularly interested in your corrected GPS coordinates.

Hi Mike. Thanks so much for the site. I've just moved here and have been wanting to get started hiking but didn't know really where to start. Your website helped me narrow down the list a little. Do you know of any hiking clubs in the area? I don't know any people yet, so I thought that might be a way to make some friends... Thanks, Michelle

Hi Mike, My name is Phil Benincaso, I am from Phillipston, MA and will be in the Denver area for work the first week of December. I have been able to manuever a day where I can take off and dayhike something in the RMNP. I was in the same situation last year and dayhiked Deer Mountain. I was awed by the spectacular views that I had and wished I had more time to burn to attempt something slightly more difficult. If I had one minor complaint about the hike it would be that I had lugged a ton of gear with me of which 99% of it stayed back in the car-I think I just about could've done it in shorts and tennis shoes. I have hiked extensively throughout the Northeast (White Mountains, NH and Green Mountains, VT) and relish the idea of having an opportunity to once again hike in RMNP. Any suggestions where I might be able to make use of my snowshoes? I will be hiking alone and would like a trail that is marked fairly decently. Incidentally, I was very impressed with your website. It has great pics, links and is extremely informative. My Brother-in-law, Dave Lister has created a web site that chronicles some of our hikes in the Northeast along with trail descriptions and links as well. If you want to check it out it is at http://www.leisurelybackpacker.com/ The mountains in the Northeast don't have near the elevation that the peaks in the RMNP have although when you look at elevation gain there isn't such a drastic difference. If your ever in our neck of the woods and have free time you should check out the White Mountain National Forrest (WMNF) It has a great network of trails maintained by a multitude of different private and public organizations. This seems to work quite well as it is rare that I have found trails in poor condition. It has it's own style of awe-inspiring beauty. Look forward to hearing from you soon-thanks.

Enjoyed your article (and pictures) on your first hike to Long's Peak with Terry Brands (GO HAWKS)! I, along with four others and a guide, did my first climb ever on July 26, 1999 to Long's Peak. Your experiences pretty much sum up the experiences we had. I'm glad that at least one person (my hubby) in our group had not seen your article before we made our climb because I'm sure he wouldn't have been along. His note in the log at the summit was if he made it back down he'd be going to divorce court. Must have just been the altitude sickness, because he was pretty proud of himself when we finished. Thanks for the great website. We'll be back in Colorado in the summer of 2002 and will use your site to research our next hike. JZ from Muscatine, IA

Your hikes and trail descriptions have really helped my husband and me plan some awesome day and overnight hikes in and around RMNP. Your site inspired us to start our own 3-ring binder of trail descriptions and a list of trails we've completed, as well as a trails-to-do list. Since there isn't any single source that has all the information we need, we use a combination of your website, hiking books, and maps to select trails. So far, your trail descriptions and lengths have been accurate. I hope your site will remain on-line for a long time. Thanks! -The Narus', Avid hikers and backpackers in northern Colorado

Hi Mike!

I climbed Long's Peak on August 7th and I think you have written the most accurate account of the climb that I have read to date.

For those contemplating a climb of Long's it is similar to raising children. The hike to the Boulderfield being like the young years where you thought it was tough. Then you get to the teenage years where you go through the keyhole, ledges, trough, notch, narrows and homestretch. After you children are grown and graduate from college you have reached the summit where you suddenly realize all the hard work was worth it and you feel the greatest sense of accomplishment.

GO FOR IT!

Just found your site, awesome-thanks. My wife and I discovered RMNP a few years ago and fell in love with it. Have done probably 95% of the hikes both in summer and snowshoeing winter. Some of the trails 5 or 6 times (Cub Lake, Loch Lake, Haihawa, Deer Mountain, Odessa, Gem Lake, Deer Lake) to name a few and never tire of the Awesome Rockies. I am from South Africa and my wife Maria is from Holland. I remember getting to the top of Grey`s one September day, and being greeted by another South African who heard my accent over the edge. Small world! Certainly wish there was a way to make a living out of guiding people in the park. We could do this for the rest of our lives! We are both professional skydiving instructors and just sold our Drop Zone out in Brush Colorado. Any ideas anyone? Blue Skies & Happy Hikes, Steve`n Maria.

Mike, Your Long's peak report and pictures inspired me give Long's peak a try. My very best friend and I made it to the Keyhole and would have tried to summit, but we were too early in the year (6-30-03) to attempt without snow gear. The climb was absolutely the best part of our trip. We both really enjoyed it. (we'll be back sometime for the summit).

Your Long's trip was a great write-up. I just did for my second time in early August with my son and his fiance (first for them). You went faster than we did by about an hour and we left earlier about 1:00 (had to wait at boulderfield for enough light to cross). Thanks. I love the park. Been backpacking there since early 80's. Favorite was Thunder Lake/Boulder Gran/Lake Nanita/Andrews Glacier/The Loch.

Thanks, Mike! Reading your excellent write-up on your Long's Peak hike was what inspired me to make the hike in August 2002 at age 49. Did it with my son, daughter, son-in-law, and a friend who had been up once before. Had no idea how exhausting it would be at my age, but we made it. I still read your write-up every now and then to relive the experience. Thanks! Bill in Cheyenne

I think your web page is a great resource for people interested in hiking the beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park! I am was a camper for many years and now am a counselor at Cheley Colorado camps located in Estes Park, right outside of the park, so I have spent much time in that area's splendor. I always love running across people with the same passion for hiking and the natural world as I have. Enjoy those beautiful mountains...I wish I lived closer to join in the adventures!

I enjoyed reading your account of several hikes in RMNP. I am planning a reunion there in July, 2006, and your site will be very useful in choosing a couple of hikes. I am beginning to hike regularly to prepare, but unfortunately, in Memphis, TN, there is no way to prepare to fend off altitude sickness. Can you recommend a source of information on that, such as any diet plans, etc. that may help to that end? Thank-you for taking the time to document and post your experiences, as I am sure they have been a useful source for many others like myself. - Steve P Allen
